What size generator do I need for my business? (How to size a generator?)

There are 2 different ways to approach this providing backup power to your business: backing up only certain portions of your business, or backing up your entire business.

If you want to back up only part of your business, for example a machine on your production floor that can never go down, or the server room storing all your critical information, or your security or phone system, you’ll need to find out exactly how much power those specific pieces of equipment consume. All of them will have that information available either on a label, or your owner’s manual/technical specifications.

If you want to back up your entire business, the easiest way to determine how much power you are consuming is to look at your electricity bill. You’re looking for peak power consumption in kW. Useful tip: Total energy consumption, usually reported in kWh, or kWh, is less relevant to the sizing of your unit, more relevant to how much fuel would cost over a month, for example, if you were to run your generator continuously).

Once you’ve determined out how much power (in kW) you need to provide to your business, whether it’s for portions of your business or your entire business, we recommend you slightly oversize your generator, as a safety factor. Although our generators will operate at 100% load, best practice is to load you generator up to 80 or 85% in normal conditions. This provides you generator a cushion for when equipment is starting (e.g. when some motors start, they can draw up to 10 times the current the draw during normal operation) and also provides some room for expansion, should your business’ electrical power demand increase.

How much does a generator cost?

This is a difficult question to answer, as no 2 generator installations are identical, but here are some of different elements of the project you should consider in your cost estimate:

Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS): This is the smart piece of gear which will detect when power goes out and automatically start your generator, and vice-versa when utility power comes back. You can look up ATS pricing here Cost of ATS

Mechanical installation costs: You will need a good base to set your generator on, typically a pre-cast cement base, or a poured cement slab. You’ll want to locate your generator as close to your building’s electrical room / panel as possible, to minimize your electrical installation costs (more on that in the next paragraph). Also, if you are installing a natural gas or propane generator set, you’ll need to hire a certified gas contractor to connect your generator to the natural gas or propane supply. For a diesel generator, you’ll need to make sure your fuel tank meets any applicable diesel fuel code, which may require some paperwork and an inspection, and finally you’ll want to account for the first fill of diesel for your tank.

Electrical installation costs: Last but not least, once you’re generator is set on its base, a certified electrical contractor to install you Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), and to make all required electrical connections between the generator, the ATS, and your building. Having located your generator in an easily accessible location close to your electrical room will minimize the cost of labor and the length of the cables required to connect all the equipment.

Permits: Please keep in mind that laws and regulations pertaining to the installation of generators can vary based on municipality and region. We strongly recommend making proper verification with local building and planning authorities before you start your project.

How long will a generator last?

All generators are not built equally. You get what you pay for. Some of the less expensive units on the market may not last for more than 4-5 years, as they are built with less robust and durable components. For example, using an air-cooled engine instead of a liquid-cooled engine will drive down cost and durability. This may also negatively impact maintenance intervals.

For generators built with durable, industrial-strength components, it is not uncommon to see generators still operating after 15 to 20 years in standby applications, as long as proper maintenance is carried throughout the life of the equipment.

What’s the difference between diesel & gas generators?

Diesel and gas (whether natural gas or propane) generators are different only in their prime mover (i.e. the engine), but this does affect the performance characteristics of each.

Gas engines are typically automotive derivative engines modified in order to enable them to run on natural gas or propane. Gas is injected in the combustion chambers and ignited by a spark plug. One of the advantages of natural gas is it’s source (the underground pipe to your business or home) is considered to be very reliable in areas where earthquakes are not a problem. They are also usually perceived as being cleaner for the environment, but they do emit pollutants, albeit ones not visible to the naked eye. The downside of natural gas generator is their reduced ability to pick up electrical load, load must be applied slowly, in multiple steps, to not overpower the engine. To make an automobile analogy, gas engines can’t accelerate or decelerate very fast, which makes it difficult to either get on the highway, or slow down to come off the highway.

Diesel generators, or more specifically diesel engines, are built to be extremely robust. They are compression ignition engines, in other words no spark plugs, and this drives the very robust, heavy design. They typically cost more upfront, but you can count on their robustness and durability. We frequently run into diesel engines which have been in operation for 20, 30 or 40 years. Diesel engines are much better at accepting electrical loads than gas engines. You can usually apply all your electrical loads at once, and the diesel engine will have no problem coping with the load. Using the car analogy, this engine can get up to highway speeds with a very short onramp, without a problem.
